I was a configurator in the Northrop Advanced Design Group when this program was first started. My design was very similar to the Lockheed F-35 including the way the horizontal tail was hinged. I hinged the horizontal tail as a body flap instead of on a spindle. The reason was simply because there was a lift nozzle right in front of the tail and the body was thick and had to be tapered down into the horizontal tail. Turns out however, the body hinged tail was significantly more effective than an all moving tail simply because the all moving tail un-ports at the root, and the body flap style tail (we nicknamed it the porch tail) pressure field carried over to the fuselage. We applied for and received a patent on the design.
